The Good, The Bad & The Queen ： Damon Albarn 給歐盟的告別信
【專輯推介】英國脫歐談判進入關鍵時刻之際， Blur 及 Gorillaz 靈魂人物 Damon Albarn 跟 Simon Tong ( The Verve ) 、 Paul Simonon ( The Clash ) 及 Tony Allen ( Fela Kuti / Africa 70 )所組成的超級組合 The Good, The Bad & The Queen ，亦出版了他們睽違11年頭的第二張專輯《 Merrie Land 》。 Damon 說這是一封「給歐盟的不情願告別信」以及「在2018年對英國特質的一系列觀察和反思」，寓意深長的歌曲也瀰漫著一份離愁別緒。
到底 Damon Albarn 有幾多隊樂隊？當然大家都一定答得出他本屬的英倫大團 Blur ，以及跟動畫創作人 Jamie Hewlett 策動的虛擬樂隊 Gorillaz 。然而我相信那不是人人都可說出 The Good, The Bad & The Queen 這隊他的超級組合( supergroup )之名字——畢竟 The Good, The Bad & The Queen 上次出版唱片，已是超過十年前的事。
The Good, The Bad & The Queen 是由 Damon Albarn 跟前 The Verve 結他手 Simon Tong ，英倫 punk rock 老祖 The Clash 的低音結他手 Paul Simonon ，以及曾為 Fela Kuti 及 Africa 70 伴奏的 Afrobeat 先鋒/西非洲尼日利亞鼓手 Tony Allen 所組成，後兩者都是前輩級的傳奇性樂手，算是跨世代的合作關係，他們的精英陣容樂團姿態也不言而喻，成為一時佳話。況且他們在2007年出版的首張同名專輯《 The Good, The Bad & The Queen 》，又是交由當時炙手可熱的製作人 Danger Mouse 操刀監製，猶如陣中的第五成員，故令到 The Good, The Bad & The Queen 來得更加超級。
起初是由一個 Damon 的尼日利亞 project 蛻變出來，而本來 The Good, The Bad & The Queen 只是一隊無名的樂隊，因為專輯命名為《 The Good, The Bad & The Queen 》，才被因利乘便地以此作為樂隊名稱。加上之後在多年來又看不到樂隊有甚麼後繼計劃，因此我也一直只有視 The Good, The Bad & The Queen 為 Damon一個即興性質、只有曇花一現的 one-off project 而已。
想不到 The Good, The Bad & The Queen 會在2018年重現，帶來他們睽違11年頭的第二張專輯《 Merrie Land 》。
首張同名專輯《 The Good, The Bad & The Queen 》的聲音，是糅合著 reggae 、 dub 、 ska 、 Afrobeat 音樂薰陶以及 British folk 曲調而來的 Britpop 風格，感覺是「很英倫」的唱片。事實上這是一張圍繞著倫敦現代生活為題的概念專輯，衷心向倫敦致敬，他們形容為「宛如寄自倫敦的明信片」。而令到 The Good, The Bad & The Queen 再現，也是因為「英倫」——英國面臨脫離歐盟的環境。
《 Merrie Land 》是 The Good, The Bad & The Queen 創作與灌錄於英國啟動脫歐程序、進行談判的時期，Damon Albarn說這是一封「給歐盟的不情願告別信」以及「在2018年對英國特質的一系列觀察和反思」，那再次是他們的概念專輯，寓意深長的歌曲也瀰漫著一份離愁別緒。
唱片監製已不再是 Danger Mouse ，今次為《 Merrie Land 》操刀與 The Good, The Bad & The Queen 作聯袂監製的，是曾跟 David Bowie 合作無間的老牌製作人 Tony Visconti 。所以他們的聲音也發生了某程度上的變化，來得更具「英倫」風景。《 Merrie Land 》的唱片封面圖片，是來自1945年英國恐怖片選集電影《 Dead of Night 》當中《 The Ventriloquist's Dummy 》的 Michael Redgrave 與其腹語術木偶；而今次《 Merrie Land 》的一系列音樂錄像，也全由人扮的木偶主演。
先行單曲兼專輯主題曲〈 Merrie Land 〉在有如迴轉木馬音樂的鍵琴與搖曳著民謠調子下， Damon 便幽幽地唱道「 If you're leaving please still say goodbye / And if you are leaving can you leave me / My silver jubilee mug / My old flag / My dark woods / My sunrise 」。
另一單曲〈 Gun to the Head 〉被形容為好比60年代 British Invasion 時期的英式流行樂，有著古意盎然的巴松管與牧童笛伴奏，以及夢幻的電風琴琴聲，也儼如 The Beatles 的迷幻歌曲色彩，英倫味非常之濃郁。
今次《 Merrie Land 》是以中慢版 ballad 曲子為主的專輯，更呈現 Damon 的觸動心靈 folk-based 歌路。但別忘記 Paul Simonon 和 Tony Allen 這對精湛的 rhythm section 仍是 The Good, The Bad & The Queen 音樂上的重點，無論是〈 Nineteen Seventeen 〉抑或 dub reggae 底蘊的〈 The Great Fire 〉都表現出後者無懈可擊的鼓擊，〈 The Truce Of Twilight 〉好比 The Clash 的 reggae 歌曲，而〈 Drifters & Trawlers 〉則換上牙買加風情，但情感仍是憂傷的。
來到專輯尾聲，〈 Ribbons 〉是萬般幽美而叫人怦然心動的 acoustic-folk 歌曲；戲劇性的〈 The Last Man to Leave 〉裡 Damon 茫然地唱出「 Don't leave me now 」，到最後帶出 「 I'll be the last man to leave / I'll be the last man to leave / And now I've gone away - what will you do? 」 ；調子傷感而美不勝收的〈 The Poison Tree 〉，一開始便有如一首浪漫的分手情歌般唱道：「 If you've got dreams you keep / And you're leaving me / I'll see you in the next life / I'll set you free / To find your promised land / If you're leaving me / It's really sad / It's really sad 」。
